Editionals™ to Offer Streamlined Digital Publishing on the iPad

Matchbin, Inc., the leader in digital publishing and local advertising solutions, today announced the Editionals™ iPad app and publishing platform to bring local news content to the forefront of digital publishing. This customizable solution allows media companies to launch their own branded app and also include their publications in the Editionals™ digital newsstand, which will be available in Apple's App Store later this spring.

"We've really built this platform to enable media companies of all sizes to take advantage of this groundbreaking device," said Reed Brown, CEO of Matchbin. "It's significantly less expensive than existing alternatives and includes all the tools a local media company needs to start monetizing their content on the iPad."

Tablets are quickly becoming the medium of choice for consuming news and information. Over seven million iPads were sold in the fourth quarter of 2010, with a projected 55 million tablets to be sold in 2011 and up to 80 million in 2012 (source: Goldman Sachs, Dec 2010). In order to fully take advantage of this growing market, Matchbin's publishing platform was constructed on HTML5 + Apple TuneKit for cross-platform, cross-device compatibility.

"Editionals is the missing link," said Miles Romney, CTO of Matchbin. "It's the cross-platform, universal publishing platform that supports not just ePub, but rich media, video, audio, full-page layouts as well. Before Editionals, publishers could either publish in the text-only ePub format, or they could build an iPad app from scratch. Now, there's another option that delivers everything."

Matchbin's publishing platform supports media of all types, including video, audio, and images, as well as rich interactive advertisements. With a simple interface for managing publications and issues, publishers have complete control over how their content is monetized. The Editionals™ Store also supports micro-payments for single issue purchases as well as subscription bundles.

Media companies will be able to offer a uniquely branded experience to their users through the App Store, as well as sell their content to a nationwide audience through the Editionals™ digital newsstand app. With the Editionals™ and partner branded apps, end users will have access to a full list of features including:

  •     Constantly updated content for real-time access to breaking news stories
  •     Automatic download of publication updates and new issues
  •     Alerts when new issues are available
  •     "Visual browse" for quickly and intuitively flipping through issue pages
  •     Sharing via Facebook, Twitter, and E-mail
  •     Font size controls and rich bookmarking tools
  •     Unique layouts for both portrait and landscape orientation
