Agenda Loft brings to Downtown Los Angeles a new venue for visual art with its exhibition of 14 recent acrylic paintings by Michael Stervinou, “Angel Wings,” opening with a reception for the artist on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, from 7-9 PM.

Stervinou brings to Los Angeles from Paris a group of acrylic paintings that speak to the power of abstract color and the countless ways its patterns can represent both public and private experience. Stervinou shows in all his work that human experience is shaped by the choices we make in how we interpret our surroundings—patterns form impressions, and impressions frame our understandings of the surrounding world. His world is an imaginative space of nature, as in “The Orchids,” a psychological landscape, as in “Ocean of Memories,” and a public spectacle, as in “The Circus.” His signature piece, “Angel Wings” elevates human experience, as seen in urban Los Angeles, to the pure abstraction of dynamic color in space, at once arresting and reassuring that there is order in the greater forces around us. Michael Stervinou’s work is unusual and appealingly postmodern in that way, as each piece explores how the totality of known order rests on unknown geometries of color and line—where beauty mixes with the sublime as we are meant to feel them.

Born on October 31, 1982 in Romania, a French citizen, Michael Stervinou currently resides in Paris. After studying international trade, he began to paint in 2005. He is self taught and inspired by the inherent need to see.

“Art does not rely on knowledge as learning, but finds its expression through the power of the eye, enough for both artist and viewer to share in the varied experience it affords.” –Michael Stervinou, 2011.

Michael Stervinou’s work has recently been viewed at Le Carrousel du Louvre—the art fair hosted by the Louvre in Paris. His exhibition of 14 acrylics entitled, “Angel Wings,” named for the City of Angels, opens at Agenda Loft on February 2 and runs to March 18 in Downtown Los Angeles at 400 South Main Street, Studio 601.

Agenda Loft will host a reception for the artist on Wednesday, February 2, between 7-9 PM.
