Leading UK cosmetic surgery specialists MYA have been weighing up the facts and figures to find out how much cosmetic surgery now impacts our lives and how the cosmetic surgery market is shaping up for 2011. According to the statistics, although the Brits are not the most surgery obsessed nation, we are definitely partial to a little surgical enhancement.

In 2009 192,678 procedures were carried out here in the UK. This places us 12th in the league of surgery lovers, with the USA topping the table with over three million procedures carried out in the same period (BAAPS).

And although the ladies are still leading the way to the surgeon’s door with 90 per cent of procedures in the UK carried out on the fairer sex, men are increasingly opting to undergo surgery. The cosmetic surgery industry has seen 21 per cent growth in demand for surgical procedures from males since 2009 (BAAPS). This figure is likely to increase further in 2011, as males take their lead from celebrities seeking surgery such as famed foul-mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay who is rumoured to have undergone a facelift and Simon Cowell who is a fan of the non-surgical procedure Botox.

In terms of our beauty ideals we are still largely looking to traditional icons, with the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reporting that Tina Turner has the most desired legs amongst women and Arnold Schwarzenegger being cited as having the number one chest requested by men. Modern beauties patients ask to imitate include Gisele Bundchen, who is admired by women for her toned stomach and David Beckham, whose legs are most-envied by his fellow male.

John Ryan, MYA.co.uk Chairman, feels that 2011 will be another positive year for the industry: “Since opening our doors in June 2007 MYA has been an incredible success. We are expecting 2011 to be another big year for the cosmetic surgery industry in general and I would predict that across the industry we will see a big increase in the number of liposuction procedures being performed mirroring the increase in the U.S. I also think that the non-surgical market will continue to grow this year with both men and women becoming increasingly conscious of their appearance and the benefits that age-defying treatments can bring.”
