Woodbridge, VA (PRWEB) February 3, 2011
MahoganyBooks is excited to announce a new partnership with the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex to facilitate a monthly Reading Series. The reading series was developed to promote African American authors with ties to the Washington DC metropolitan area. The events will be held at Betty’s Place & Café in the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex, located at 8001 Sheriff Rd. Landover, MD at 7pm.
The first event, which was held in January, featured Danielle Evans, author of the critically acclaimed book, Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self. For the February installation, MahoganyBooks and the PG Sports & Learning Complex will welcome American University professor and former editor of the Black Political Agenda, Dr. Clarence Lusane. Dr. Lusane’s book, The Black History of the White House, presents a comprehensive history of the White House from an African American perspective, illuminating the central role it has played in advancing, thwarting or simply ignoring efforts to achieve equal rights for all.
“We are excited to host Dr. Lusane for the second event of the MahoganyBooks Reading Series,” says Derrick A. Young, MahoganyBooks CEO. “This month’s conversation with Dr. Lusane presents an intimate opportunity for area residents to learn and discuss how those who lived and worked with the most iconic house in the country impacted their family’s move from slavery to freedom.”
A reading series is a recurring public literary event featuring writers reading from their work to a live audience. The reading will be followed by a Q&A and autograph session.
Derrick continues, “When we were developing the concept for our Reading Series we wanted to create a community event whose strategic focus is literature. We want the residents of PG County to have a forum where engaging discussions, derived from great works of literature, could be the spark for personal, community, or social change. This is what made Karibu Books significant and we are working to bring that back.”
The MahoganyBooks Reading Series is a free event; however, guests who wish to have their book autographed must purchase their book either in advance from MahoganyBooks.com or at the event. Guests will be asked to present their MahoganyBooks receipt. Special event pricing for each book is available online at http://www.MahoganyBooks.com.
