As the country celebrates National Children’s Dental Health Month in February, veteran San Antonio cosmetic dentist Dr. Edward Camacho, DDS, is stepping up to raise money for the work of the acclaimed Smile Train charity, which provides free surgery to repair clefts in poor children around the world.

About one in every 700 children are born with a cleft lip and/or palate. While these deformities are quickly and easily repaired in the United States and other developed countries, the surgery is prohibitively expensive for the poor, and not enough doctors in developing nations have training to correct the problem.

Physically, most children with clefts cannot eat or speak properly. And in developing countries, as with other people with deformities, they are likely to be ostracized – barred from attending school or getting a job, and subject to humiliating taunts and treatment.

The good news is that doctors can correct clefts with surgery that takes as little as 45 minutes and costs as little as $250.

The Smile Train (http://www.smiletrain.org) focuses on a single goal: to bring smiles to millions of poor children with cleft lips and palates with corrective surgery, free of charge.

Smile Train also provides free cleft-related training for doctors and medical professionals, teaching health professionals in developing countries the skills to treat the children of their countries.

Dr. Camacho and his practice - Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio - are supporting Smile Train and National Children’s Dental Health Month with a special offer: Get a Whiter Smile & Change a Child’s Life. During February, Dr. Camacho is offering custom take-home whitening kits for $199 (normally $300). He will then donate $50 of the purchase price to Smile Train.

For those who just want to donate without the kit purchase, Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio is also collecting Smile Train donations through its Facebook page, or by dropping off a check at the dental practice at 16635 Huebner, Suite 102, San Antonio.

“Our practice is dedicated to creating beautiful smiles for our patients,” Dr. Camacho said. “We support Smile Train for its dedication to bringing smiles to the faces of poor children who might otherwise suffer their whole lives.”
