It was 5 years ago that Gregory Cowley set out to start a professional photography studio in the Dogpatch area of San Francisco. Since then the studio has worked with dozens of high end commercial clients including Intel, Adobe, Overland Equipment, and The Sak and opened it’s doors to hundreds of individuals, professionals and celebrities for portrait comissions.

Gregory created Cowley Studios after a long and fruitful career as a graphic designer. Photography had always been an important part of Gregory’s interests and he felt it was high time to make it a full time endevour. Launching Cowley Studios marked the beginning of embracing Gregory’s love for interacting with people, exploring the world visually, documenting experiences, and creating beautiful images for his clients.

“I see the camera as an excuse to get to know people, both on a conversational level and a chance to really pay attention to their personality. The image that we create together is a document of an experience. This is the depth that I bring to my photographs and it shows. A photograph is far more than a 2D representation of the subject, it’s a story about this subject at this moment.” -- Gregory

It’s been a rough ride weathering the economy as a photography studio. This is especially true due to the proliferation of new and more advanced digital cameras that have brought photography to the masses. But Gregory has held true to his belief that photography is a well honed skill. He believes that people will still seek out creative thinking and quality professional photography.

“I picked the worst time ever to become a photographer. It’s been an uphill climb, but it’s also been very rewarding. I had to make the move and would not have done it any other way.” -- Gregory

He has produced commercial fashion photography for The Sak and created the images for the prolific Adobe PhotoShop Elements packaging seen in Apple Stores across the world. Gregory’s Editorial work has taken him to Argentina, Asia, Europe and New York where he has shot for Red Models NYC. He has worked with celebrity chef Michael Chiarello as well as the executive team at Google for magazine spreads.

Early on in the creation of Cowley Studios, Gregory saw the importance of education. He has been teaching at CCA since 2002 and wanted to bring those values to his studio. In late 2006 Gregory launched the studios internship program and it is still an important part of the studio today. Nearly a dozen aspiring photographers and graphic designers have learned and immersed themselves in the world of photography at Cowley Studios.

Gregory is looking forward to the next 5 years and has added photography workshops to the studios list of offerings. He is continuing with his mission to educate people with one evening workshops that allow aspiring photographers to learn a lot in a short period of time. Gregory invites all inquiries for Commercial, Editorial, and personal portrait commission photography. He also plans to focus more on the wonders of the Wine Country being as the studio is so close to so many great wineries.
