The Wonk Salon has opened its doors to the public. Published by veteran columnist, policy blogger and magazine editor James A. Bacon, the blog provides a daily roundup of the public policy research coming out of the nation's top think tanks.
"With one bookmark you can access the greatest scholarly minds in the public policy arena," says Bacon. "We monitor the publications of nearly 100 think tanks every day so you don't have to. It's all about saving you time -- and turning up useful studies and reports that you might otherwise miss."
The bigger think tanks have well-oiled publicity machines, and media outlets routinely pick up their studies. But dozens of smaller, lesser-known organizations that conduct excellent research often get overlooked. In the Wonk Salon, no public policy scholar gets left behind.
The blog also stands out as a forum where controversial research can be dissected and debated. Very few think tanks allow website visitors to make comments. The Wonk Salon is a neutral, carefully policed forum where people can engage in civil conversation over issues that matter to them. "We're seeking to establish a higher level of discourse," says Bacon. "We have a zero tolerance policy toward vulgarity and ad hominem attacks. We are a haven of gentility on the Web."
While the Wonk Salon lists all the major think tanks, Bacon says, some smaller organizations may have slipped through the net. Upon request, he will add organizations that meet his target profile.
The Wonk Salon does not cover research reports published by trade associations, corporations or advocacy groups, nor does it highlight shorter op-ed pieces written by think tank fellows. But advertising and sponsorship opportunities are available to organizations seeking to promote their events, publications and causes on the blog.
"People are getting tired of the name calling and regurgitation of talking points that characterizes so much of our debate over critical issues," Bacon says. "The Wonk Salon is a refuge for those who appreciate the complexities and nuances of public policy."
