Nuclear Energy Insider: Positive Signs for Future Nuclear Waste Management

Share Article

Despite the current excitement surrounding new build projects, it is clear from the government’s recent commitment to the nuclear decommissioning programme that current and future waste management remains one of the top priorities.

It is therefore great to hear that Magnox Ltd and Arvia (a specialist waste treatment company) have recently been awarded the Rushlight Clean Environment award at an event in Westminster which was hosted by the Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor.

Arvia Technology Ltd and Magnox Ltd are developing the Arvia Titan, a solution for the treatment of radioactive oil waste. Retrieving and processing this type of waste material is a major decommissioning challenge.

A full-scale Arvia Titan unit is now in operation at Trawsfynydd, providing a sustainable onsite alternative to the incineration of oil waste at specialist facilities across Europe.

In a recent press release Trawsfynydd's Site Director, Dave Wilson, said:
"The award is testament to the hard work, inspiration and innovation demonstrated by the project team. Radioactive waste oil is amongst the most difficult waste streams we have to manage at Trawsfynydd – the Arvia solution could prove to be a significant step forward for the whole nuclear industry."
The NDA has also shown the importance of future waste management by offering a bursary of up to £500,000 to continue to support PHD projects which focus on developing solutions to many of the technical challenges posed by decommissioning including waste characterisation.

Bursaries are among a number of mechanisms available under the R&D programme, ranging from small-scale supply chain projects of less than £50,000 to larger initiatives that can attract up to £1 million of funding.

Senior Industry figures including the Radioactive Substances Regulation Senior Advisor for the Environment Agency and the Managing Director for LLWR will be discussing waste management options at the 2nd Annual Nuclear Decommissioning Supply Chain Conference on the 5th-6th April
