London, UK (PRWeb UK) February 12, 2011
Market Harborough (Meerkat Harborough) has been shortlisted in a campaign to twin a UK town with the Russian meerkat village of Meerkovo, the home of Aleksandr Orlov, the founder of comparethemeerkat.com. Four other UK towns have also been shortlisted: Market Drayton (Meerkat Drayton), Windermere (Windermeer), Downham Market (Downham Meerkat) and Western Super Mare (Western Super Meer).
For two weeks meerkat fans across the country have been nominating their own towns via Facebook and Twitter. Over 1000 nominations were received.
The five shortlisted towns will now go head-to-head in a public vote.
To vote for Market Harborough, people should visit http://www.facebook.com/comparethemeerkat . Voting closes on the 18th February and the winner will be announced week commencing the 21st February via 'The Meerkovian', the meerkats' newspaper accessible on the website http://www.meerkovo.com.
The winning town will receive official Meerkovo twin town status by changing its name for the day as well as receiving a community donation of £5,000*. The date of the twin town day will be agreed with the winner.
The village of Meerkovo is the focus of the entrepreneurial meerkat's latest television commercials. In them he seeks to raise awareness of the plight of the village, which continues to suffer as people who are looking for cheap car insurance on comparethemarket.com are visiting his site comparethemeerkat.com by mistake.
A new website meerkovo.com has also been launched where people can visit the meerkat village, meet its inhabitants and play games to help save Meerkovo and prove they know the difference between comparethemarket.com and comparethemeerkat.com
Speaking from his mansion, Aleksandr said, "To help raise awareness of plight of Meerkovo, our great village is become twin sibling with one lucky town from United Kingdoms! After hundreds of nominations, I have create short list of five towns. But which is make best match? Is very difficult decision, so I create online poll for UK peoples to make vote heard on the Facebook. Happy votings, and may the best town make victory!"
