iSirona to Premiere Software-based Approach to Device Connectivity at HIMSS

New approach gives hospitals unprecedented flexibility around implementation and future IT strategies

Until now, a major drawback to device integration solutions was that they involved investments in dedicated connectivity hardware

iSirona, a provider of simplified solutions for medical device connectivity, today announced its software-based approach to device connectivity--the industry's first solution that can be fully installed on any standard computing platform.

The benefits of device connectivity include reduced documentation time, the elimination of transcription errors and faster access to more accurate data. However, according to HIMSS Analytics, device connectivity adoption has been slow. HIMSS Analytics recently surveyed 825 healthcare organizations about interfacing medical devices with the EMR. The results revealed that just one-third of the hospitals surveyed had an active interface between their medical devices and their EMR.

"Until now, a major drawback to device integration solutions was that they involved investments in dedicated connectivity hardware," says iSirona CEO Dave Dyell.

As an alternative to installing this time-consuming and costly hardware, iSirona's software can be quickly installed on existing, multi-use technology platforms such as PCs and mobile workstations. Plus, the iSirona software embeds directly into a hospital's existing CIS, eliminating the need for extensive clinician training. Many iSirona customers report that installs take only a matter of weeks, and clinicians are up to speed in minutes.

"We've seen significant improvements in timeliness, accuracy and workflow," says Patrick Neece, CIO at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, a 475-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving 200,000 patients. "In fact, it previously took our patient care technicians 5.3 minutes per patient to collect and enter vital signs. Now, it takes them 3.4 minutes."
