Exclusive partnership will unlock new revenue source for 70,000 forums and online communities

Popular forum software firm vBulletin today announced that they have integrated innovative monetization technology Skimlinks into their core software, offering it directly to their entire user base.

vBulletin Solutions, owned by Internet Brands Inc, has chosen Skimlinks as their exclusive in-text monetization partner, with the service available to vBulletin software owners from today.

Skimlinks can be activated directly through vBulletin’s core software for all v4.x users, and as a plugin downloadable from vBulletin’s Members’ area for all legacy users.

The Skimlinks technology works by turning product links and product references simply and seamlessly into affiliate links, designed so as not to intrude on the community experience. Skimlinks helps forum owners earn commissions from up to 12,500 merchants for sales referred by their community.

The vBulletin integration also offers an extensive degree of control for forum owners as to how Skimlinks can be implemented, to best suit the characteristics and sensitivities of each individual forum.

Skimlinks has been the leading provider in online content monetization for two years, working with publishers of all sizes, from niche blogs through to publishing platforms, newspapers, and content networks. However, forums have long been the publisher type that performs best with this type of monetization.

Skimlinks CEO and Co-founder Alicia Navarro says product-centric sites tend to have users with higher purchase intent, and while editorial sites in this category have conversion rates of 1-3%, forums using in-text affiliate links convert at a rate anywhere between 3-10%.

To have forum owners fostering communities that discuss their products is an attractive proposition for advertisers. It’s similarly rewarding for forum owners, as Skimlinks unlocks this latent revenue potential, with many forum clients earning upwards of $80,000 annually through the service.

Navarro says the key to monetizing forums effectively is understanding the community:

“Monetizing social media can be a sensitive activity, and we’re proud of the fact that we’ve built our products to be considerate of the user experience, with extensive customization features for the forum owner. We have years of experience monetizing forums, and we are looking forward to sharing our knowledge and best practices with vBulletin’s network of forums.”

vBulletin is introducing Skimlinks as a monetization partner as part of their initiatives towards expanding revenue generating opportunities for vBulletin customers.

vBulletin Senior Operations Manager Adrian Harris says the integration with vBulletin and Skimlinks will be a lucrative new feature for their clients.

“We discovered that Skimlinks has the most innovative and wide range of products that provide forum owners not only with the choice and flexibility, but also with the highest revenue potential. With Skimlinks’ high level of customer service and product quality we felt it would be a great fit for our customers.”

This partnership means Skimlinks will become one of only two monetization partners built into the core software for vBulletin, the other being Google AdSense.
