Parents who wonder whether hiring a private tutor in Los Angeles can really make a difference for their children will be relieved by this resounding “YES.” L.A.-based educational services company 1 On 1 Academic Tutors released results of an internal study today, showing that 1,522 students who received one-on-one instruction from tutors in Los Angeles made an average improvement of 53% on test scores.

“This much improvement usually reflects two or three letter grades: That’s huge,” said Jason Daniel Illoullian, Co-Founder of 1 On 1 Academic Tutors. “Even more important than grades is the fact that these students’ comprehension of the subject matter is so much better. They have a better foundation for future learning.”

This initial sample only represents the first 1,522 students – out of thousands currently being served by 1 On 1 Academic Tutors in Los Angeles – to complete a 30 hour program of intensive tutoring.

After being matched with tutors based on geography, tutor subject expertise, and personality/learning style, students were assessed with a test based on the California state learning standards for English or Math. The pre-test identified areas where each student needed specific help, and the tutors then provided targeted math tutoring or English tutoring over several months, using 1 On 1 Academic Tutors’ custom standards-based curriculum. At the conclusion of the tutoring, the students were tested again to determine their improvement.

“We’re thrilled that this data provides such solid evidence that one-on-one tutoring works ,” said David Moses Manshoory, Co-Founder and CEO of 1 On 1 Academic Tutors. “We started this company because we know through experience that tutoring can change kids’ lives. We’re proud of our dedicated Los Angeles tutors and motivated students who make this kind of academic achievement possible.”

The study also revealed that students in second through sixth grades made the most dramatic improvement with the help of a tutor. Students in second and third grade nearly doubled their initial test scores.

“Many parents hesitate to hire a tutor until their children are struggling with advanced subjects in higher grades,” said Sarah Blake, Director of Educational Strategy, “but by then the students may be in way over their heads, and turning grades around takes much more time and effort. We find with our clients that starting early, and building solid comprehension and great study skills, can have the biggest educational impact over time.”

Blake, who has a master’s degree in education from Harvard University, says there are many advantages to hiring a math tutor or English tutor in Los Angeles, especially for parents who lack the time or subject matter expertise to personally tutor their children.

“Anyone who has ever been tutored by their parent can tell you that completing homework together can be a major strain on parent-child relationships,” says Blake. “Teaching is an art and a science, and not everybody is good at it. A trained, experienced tutor can change the way a child feels about learning and have a truly incredible impact on their academic performance.”
