Sunquest Information Systems®, a leading provider of healthcare information technology, announced that Gayle Harrell, a member of the Florida House of Representatives, will be discussing the importance of incorporating laboratory information into a hospital’s meaningful use strategy at Sunquest’s booth at the HIMSS 2011 conference, February 20-24, 2011, in Orlando, Florida.

Representative Harrell, who has been active in helping shape health care technology, including the incorporation of meaningful use criteria, will be at Sunquest’s booth # 6171 from 1 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 21st.

Representative Harrell’s experience in healthcare made her a leader in setting healthcare policy for the State of Florida during her service as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008, and again since 2010. She served for six years as Chair of such Healthcare Committees as the Committee on Health Quality, the Healthcare General Committee and the Healthcare Standards Committee. She also served on the Healthcare Council and the Health and Human Services Appropriations Committee.

In addition, Representative Harrell is a nationally recognized leader in Health Information Technology and was one of four legislators nationally to serve on the National Governor’s Association State Alliance for e-Health. She serves on the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Healthcare Reform Committee and was appointed by Republican Leader John Boehner to the national Health Information Technology Policy Committee as established under ARRA 2009 (Stimulus Bill).

This important committee is making recommendations to the Office of the National Coordinator and HHS on the implementation of the HITECH provisions of ARRA 2009 and the expenditure of over $44 billion to promote the use of electronic health records.

“Sunquest is extremely pleased that Representative Harrell will be at the Sunquest booth to discuss health care technology adoption and usability,” said Richard Atkin, president and chief executive officer of Sunquest Information Systems. “She has been an active proponent of the idea that electronic health records and 21st century health information technology are a key to reducing costs and improving outcomes.”
