A new range of charitable on shore experiences are now offered by P&O Cruises on round the world cruises.

Green World Tours is a programme of charitable and responsible tourism based shore experiences designed to support the towns and communities visited on these longer itineraries, as well as giving the passenger a unique experience ashore.

The first Green World Tour was operated in November on the Oriana world cruise. A group of passengers and crew visited the SOS Children’s Village in Manila and approximately £500 was raised by passengers for the children and donations of toys, games and sweets were also made by passengers and crew.

Other visits throughout the current world cruises include a children’s home in Port Kelang, the Sunshine Village in Phuket and the Peninsular School Feeding Project in Cape Town.

The tours vary in price and are non-profit making. Some include a donation and others just cover costs and passengers are free to donate as much or as little as they choose.

Tours are offered on all the P&O Cruises world cruises, currently Arcadia (5 January – 29 March 2011), Aurora (9 January – 14 April 2011) and Artemis (4 January – 12 April 2011). The cruises are between 82 and 98 nights in duration with shorter sectors available.

Tours are offered in ports of call including Port Kelang (Kuala Lumpur), Phuket, Durban, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Limon, Manila, Laem Chabang and Koh Samui.

P&O Cruises managing director, Carol Marlow, said: “We have seen an excellent response to this new collection of tours and this shows that our passengers and crew really value the destinations that they visit and want to give something back.

“The donation included in the Peninsular School Feeding Project in Cape Town is £38 and this will feed one child for a year. Every passenger who chooses one of these tours is making a wonderful contribution to the people who need it most.

“In addition to taking these tours, our passengers and crew have been incredibly generous and have donated clothes, toys, games, books and toiletries. By visiting these destinations and drawing attention to areas of need, we have been able to make a real difference and we look forward to continuing these tours in the years to come.”

Green World Tours are also offered to various wildlife centres and charitable projects, such as the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre in Laem Chabang and the Cats and Dogs Rescue Centre in Koh Samui.
