In order to select its winners, Natural Health’s editorial staff followed a list of guidelines created by leading expert judges with the goal to find the best foods that are just a bit easier to work into its readers’ day. This list of guidelines is not only the criteria on which the packaged foods were evaluated, but is also available now as a list of Food Rules shoppers can use at the grocery store to purchase tasty foods that are also good for you. The judging criteria included the following factors: the first ingredient should be representative of the products; ingredients should be mostly recognizable; the product shouldn’t contain any food additives like hydrogenated fats, artificial sweeteners or preservatives; there should be reasonable amounts of sodium and sugar per serving; and lastly, there should be optimal amounts of fiber, vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Companies that are currently implementing eco-conscious practices were also provided extra ‘kudos’ during the judging process.
