Travellers Who Ignore Government Advice Face Real Danger, Says World First

Travel insurance specialist warns holidaymakers to follow FCO advice or pay the price

World First Travel Insurance is reminding travellers that they must observe Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) travel advice issued as a condition of their travel insurance policy. Failure to comply with this will invalidate their insurance and leave them extremely vulnerable.

The FCO currently advise against all travel to the Ivory Coast and Somalia and all but essential travel to Bahrain, Guinea, Haiti, Mauritania and Niger.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice is based on information obtained from embassies, consulates, high commissions alongside intelligence services and local knowledge. They review their advice on a monthly basis or following any incident that could affect any Briton travelling to or resident there.

Martin Rothwell, Managing Partner of World First Travel Insurance says, "As travel insurance specialists we rely on Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice in judging risks and necessary actions to ensure we deliver the best possible service. If customers find themselves in a country or region when advice is issued not to travel there, they will be covered and we work hard to get them out as quickly as possible. If customers ignore FCO advice, for example set off to Bahrain on holiday, we and all other travel insurers will not cover them."

World First Travel Insurance urges anyone travelling to destinations where there is a perceived higher risk to use the Foreign and Commonwealth Office LOCATE service. It is designed to ensure that anyone travelling to foreign shores is accounted for and not forgotten should anything happen in the destination during a stay. To register for the LOCATE service travellers need to visit the FCO website and provide information about travel plans and some personal information.

The LOCATE service has a number of benefits:
•If a major catastrophe occurs, they will have an instant record of your details so they can make contact to find out if you are OK and provide advice.
•If family and friends need to get in touch with you whilst abroad the FCO can help them to find you.
•It only takes a few minutes to register your travel or residence information online and the local British Embassy will know you are coming. You do not need to contact them directly.
•You only need to register for the service once and then update your account when you make a new trip abroad or change your country of residence. You can even add planned trips abroad up to a year ahead
•LOCATE improves the ability of the FCO to provide help in an emergency and reduce delay and worry in times of stress for family and friends at home.
