The future of web application stores launched today with the unveiling of Openspace at the LAUNCH Conference. Openspace, now in private beta, is the first open web app store that enables anyone to discover and purchase a digital application once and use anywhere, anytime on any device – smartphones, tablet, laptop and desktop, Mac or PC.
The addressable audience for a new kind of app store that offers cross-device and cross-platform applications is billions. According to Gartner, app downloads exceeded 4.5 billion in 2010 accounting for US$6.3 billion in revenue. By 2013, Gartner forecasts app downloads to surpass 21.6 billion, grossing more than US$29 billion.
Robert Reich and Randy Watler founded Openspace to free people from app lock-down. Reich and Watler increasingly became frustrated by dropped calls on their iPhones due to poor AT&T service but quickly realized the hundreds of dollars in apps they would lose if they switched to a an Android or a Windows Mobile Phone. In June 2010, Reich and Watler started building Openspace, an app store for the buyer, not the device.
Like the Apple App Store or the Android Marketplace, Openspace consumers can purchase and install web apps, games, music, and books. However unlike these stores, Openspace has an innovative user license that enables consumers to buy once, use anywhere. The user license mixed with HTML5, means that you can purchase that hot new game on Windows while sitting at a desk and then bump it over to a smartphone to play on your bus ride home. Openspace takes care of syncing between registered devices making it simple and easy to use apps anywhere on any device. Additionally, the cross-browser, cross-platform license lets users sell or gift their apps just like they can in the physical world with books, movies and games.
“Openspace is a game changer for the way apps are purchased, used and enjoyed. No longer should the consumer be locked down by device to enjoy their favorite apps,” said Robert Reich, Founder and CEO of Openspace Store, Inc. “Openspace is the people’s app store and we believe you are really going to like the freedom of being open.”
Openspace is a one-touch app marketplace for anyone to discover, purchase, install and sync apps across any smartphone, tablet, desktop or laptop. Founded in June 2010 and launched in February 2011, Openspace is an app store for you, not your device. Openspace was co-founded by Robert Reich and Randy Watler and is a privately held company based in Boulder, Colo. The Foundry Group led the seed round of investment followed by prominent angel investors from Boulder and New York such as David Cohen and Zelkova Ventures. Jason Mendelson serves on the Board of Directors. For more information, please visit http://openspacestore.com or follow along on Twitter http://twitter.com/openspacestore.
