Pearson, the world's leading learning company, today announced enVisionMATH Common Core, a new print and digital curriculum program for students in kindergarten through grade 6. The first mathematics program written specifically to the new Common Core State Standards, enVisionMATH Common Core will be available to schools for the 2011-2012 school year.

enVisionMATH Common Core is based on the same research-driven pedagogy as the award-winning enVisionMATH, the #1 selling curriculum in the US. enVisionMATH Common Core includes new content that directly addresses requirements of the Standards for Mathematical Content, while building on enVisionMATH's foundational pillars of conceptual understanding through daily problem-based interactive learning and step-by-step visual learning.

"This program reflects the organization, focus, and coherence in mathematics instruction that teachers need to be truly successful as they transition to the Common Core State Standards," said Dr. Francis "Skip" Fennell, co-author of enVisionMATH Common Core and member of the Common Core State Standards Work Team. He added, "enVisionMATH Common Core enhances the development of important understandings, without which students cannot fully engage in the Mathematical Practices of the Common Core. The program's careful and consistent use of instructional tools including visual (e.g. bar diagrams) and manipulative models are designed to not only help develop understanding but assist in enhancing problem solving and reasoning opportunities."

Dr. Jane Schielack, also co-author of enVisionMATH Common Core as well as a member of the NCTM Review Team of the Common Core Standards, said, "This new edition of the country's leading math curriculum is built from the ground up to provide 100% coverage of the Common Core State Standards. We've taken great care to infuse the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice in meaningful, explicit ways throughout the entire program. Also, enVisionMATH Common Core includes ideas and materials for solid and effective intervention that supports teachers in responding to students' individual needs."

In addition to Dr. Fennell and Dr. Schielack, the enVisionMATH Common Core author team includes Dr. Randy Charles, a past Vice President of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Research Advisory Committee. Dr. Charles was also a member of the writing team for the NCTM Curriculum Focal Points. Dr. Charles said, "The Common Core State Standards call for a coherent elementary school mathematics curriculum. enVisionMATH Common Core was built on a framework of Big Ideas and Essential Understandings. This framework provides coherence related to conceptual understanding, complementing the content coherence provided by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. This framework makes clear the ideas students need to understand and how those ideas are related."

Mike Evans heads up Pearson's Mathematics Program development. He said, "Pearson is committed to working with states, schools, and teachers to make this significant shift to the Common Core State Standards. In addition to our curriculum programs, we are developing specialized professional development for teachers to make this transition as seamless as possible for everyone." He added, "Common Core represents a monumental change in education in America. Along with educators across the country, we are focused on improving outcomes for our children so that they are college and career-ready, and we will continue looking at all ways we can collaborate with schools and others to make that a reality." Evans said that with enVisionMATH Common Core, teachers will be teaching "the right content, in the right way, at the right time."

The pedagogy of enVisionMATH is validated by the student gains reported in an independent, scientific research study based on the rigorous standards required by the Department of Education's What Works Clearinghouse. This study found that fifth-graders learning with the program jumped the equivalent of an astonishing five grade levels in math computation achievement in just two years (see video). And the findings from the second year of this two-year randomized control study by Planning, Research and Evaluation Services (PRES) Associates showed that enVisionMATH students overall significantly improved in the areas of math concepts, problem solving, computation, and vocabulary.
