PUMA is a great example of a smart, innovative company that is embracing cloud computing to drive innovation, and we are proud that they have selected Eucalyptus to play such an important role in their IT strategy

Eucalyptus Systems, creators of the leading independent cloud platform, today announced that PUMA, one of the world's leading sportlifestyle companies, has selected the Eucalyptus private cloud to deliver infrastructure-as-a-service for the production Web services at http://www.PUMA.com and affiliated PUMA websites. As the foundation of PUMA's cloud computing initiative, Eucalyptus enables PUMA to deliver dynamically scalable, highly available, elastic and agile Web applications from its on-premise IT resources, in a secure environment.

"Like many popular consumer websites, PUMA.com and related sites can experience high traffic demands very quickly, often in response to promotions or other industry events, and they cannot afford slow response times. The Eucalyptus cloud platform lets PUMA deliver a fast, highly available e-commerce Web experience for PUMA customers worldwide, automatically scaling services up and down to efficiently meet variable demand," said Marten Mickos, CEO at Eucalyptus Systems.

"PUMA is a great example of a smart, innovative company that is embracing cloud computing to drive innovation, and we are proud that they have selected Eucalyptus to play such an important role in their IT strategy," continued Mickos.

PUMA provides Web services through its primary website, PUMA.com, as well as through affiliated "mini-sites" that are often developed for a specific event or promotion. The team at PUMA looked to cloud computing to manage scaling on these sites to meet variable demand and to utilize their IT resources more efficiently and cost-effectively.

The Eucalyptus private cloud platform lets organizations implement on-premise infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) using their own virtualized infrastructure, without modification, special-purpose hardware or reconfiguration. With Eucalyptus, users can make more efficient use of their computing resources, increase agility and deploy new applications faster, while protecting sensitive data and reducing capital expenditures.

"Eucalyptus provides an elastic and scalable private cloud platform, with a worldwide development community and professional support, so they were the natural choice for PUMA's business-critical websites," said Jay Basnight, PUMA's Senior Digital Marketing Manager. "And Eucalyptus is interface-compatible with Amazon Web Services (AWS), so we have the flexibility to easily expand to a hybrid private-public cloud."

Eucalyptus enhances PUMA's flexibility in designing and deploying its Web applications and eases maintenance of its underlying infrastructure. Developing dynamically scalable Web applications requires a robust, agile underlying infrastructure that can adapt and cater to the demanding requirements of the application tier. With Eucalyptus, provisioning and managing the compute, network, and storage resources helps de-couple the application layer from the underlying physical infrastructure, while delivering and guaranteeing the service level agreements (SLAs) that govern application needs.
