“Poor self image takes a toll on finding, developing, and keeping relationships,” says Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil, PhD, author of Make Up Don’t Break Up with accompanying DVD Falling in Love and Staying in Love, responding to a recent Glamour poll that reveals that 97 percent of women admitted to having an “I hate my body” moment at least once a day (http://www.glamour.com/health-fitness/2011/02/shocking-body-image-news-97-percent-of-women-will-be-cruel-to-their-bodies-today).
“It is easy to understand why women have such self loathing. With celebrity worship, and media attention on beauty, dieting, and ways to change ones body, girls grow up with the message that they are far from perfect,” says Weil. “It is imperative that women change that attitude and end the habit of criticizing themselves.”
In Make Up Don’t Break Up, Dr. Bonnie teaches women positive affirmation techniques, like repeating messages that say 'I am loving, I am adequate.'
“I explain that women with poor self image have fewer dates, and shorter relationships, exacerbating their low self esteem,” says Weil, who adds that exercises in the book include putting affirmations on the bathroom mirror, and repeating positive mantras.
