Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 5, 2011
BACnet International (BI) and the BACnet Interest Group Europe (BIG-EU) have agreed on a global BACnet conformance verification scheme for BACnet devices. At the AHR Expo in Las Vegas the boards of the American and European BACnet groups approved a plan that provides for the quickest possible implementation. The certification, which is based on the test plans of the BACnet Testing Laboratories (BTL), meets the European requirements of certification procedures and product standards as well. Moreover, the integration with the European Construction Products Directive is ensured.
For manufacturers, the mutual recognition of testing results means more flexibility in selecting the testing labs. BIG-EU President Volker Röhl says: “In terms of form and content European certification meets our energy efficiency guidelines. Depending on the target market, the manufacturer will decide on which laboratory he will be addressing.” Both laboratories, the American BTL and the European WSP Lab are available.
Andy McMillan, President of BACnet International and General Manager of Philips Teletrol, sees the certification of BACnet devices on a winning course worldwide: "For the proof of conformity, we have created a global framework that takes regulations in other countries into account. This also simplifies the implementation of BACnet into the growth markets."
The outcome of a round-robin test in which participating laboratories demonstrate the reproducibility of testing results, is to be expected shortly. After this, there will be nothing hindering mutual recognition of testing results. The manufacturers are already preparing for it. Reportedly all testing capacity has been exhausted, so that considerations concerning further BACnet testing laboratories are already.

About BACnet® International
BACnet International is an industry association that facilitates the successful use of the BACnet protocol in building automation and control systems through interoperability testing, educational programs, and promotional activities. The BACnet standard was developed by ASHRAE and has been made publicly available so that manufacturers can create interoperable systems of products. BACnet International complements the work of the ASHRAE standards committee and BACnet-related interest groups around the world. BACnet International members include building owners, consulting engineers and facility managers, as well as companies involved in the design, manufacturing installation, commissioning, and maintenance of control equipment that uses BACnet for communication. The BACnet Interest Group Europe (BIG-EU) promotes the use of the global BACnet communication standard ISO 16484-5 in building automation and security technologies in Europe. It was founded by 18 manufacturers and users in 1998. Today it consists of over 80 members from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the USA. Its intentions are on one hand the perception of European interests concerning the development of the BACnet standard and the exchange of information with both ASHRAE’s BACnet standardizing committee “SSPC 135” and the “BACnet International” association, and on the other hand the collaborate marketing, and conform qualifications and the developing of technical guidelines.
