Alteryx Expands Educational Grant Program

Alteryx®, the developer of the world’s fastest and most robust Geographic Business Intelligence® technology platform, has expanded its successful Alteryx Educational Grant Program to include the world’s leading Business, Computer Science and Geography academic departments and research institutions. With the goal of improving cognitive learning around geospatial in university course curricula, the following new members will join founding institutions Pennsylvania State University, University of Rochester—Simon School of Business, University of North Texas, and the University of California, Irvine—Paul Merage School of Business in facilitating collaboration between industry and academia:

  •     JK Institute of Technology & Management, Mumbai, India
  •     Ryerson University, Canada
  •     East China University, China
  •     Wuhan University, China

Cumulatively, Alteryx has distributed more than $1 million in software grants to educational institutions. Each institution receives free Alteryx software licenses, technical support, a scholarship, and is encouraged to develop internships and a jobs program to forward collaboration between departments, universities and industry partners. The total grant value for each university exceeds $150,000, and each educational facility receives a $5,000 scholarship as part of the grant. For 2010, University of North Texas Masters student Tony Ostrander was the first $5,000 scholarship recipient.

“For my thesis research, I’m using Alteryx to complete a comprehensive, national analysis of Walmart store locations and markets,” said Ostrander. “My experience has encouraged other graduate students to use Alteryx in their research plans, especially related to business location analysis and market assessment.”

“We train our students to provide geographic analysis and expertise in a wide range of contexts, including urban development, market analysis, real estate, energy, hydrological analysis, medical geography and other areas,” said Dr. Murray D. Rice, University of North Texas Department of Geography. “We’ve found Alteryx invaluable in helping us draw a direct connection between classroom theory and real-world application. Insights we teach in class come to life when we demonstrate implementations with Alteryx that incorporate real location and business data.”

Direct success with coursework is encouraging the University of North Texas and other schools to expand the use of Alteryx to more instructional settings. Courses in location-allocation modeling and economic geography are next on the list for adoption at North Texas.

The program was founded on the premise that there is essentially a “where” to all subject matter, and thus an ideal opportunity for university Geography departments to cross-pollinate spatial analytics into wide-ranging course curricula, from marketing and statistics to economics and social sciences. “We’re helping the academic fields of Geography, Business and Computer Sciences by developing a campus-wide approach to geospatial data management, and to prepare the next generation of students, professors and professionals with the promise of geospatial intelligence into virtually every aspect of education and the global economy,” said Stoecker.
