Britons can now discover how tipsy their town is via a new online search. With an estimated 15 million people drinking in one of the UK's 54,000 pubs at least once a week, the search facility is geared towards house hunters who want to calculate how 'tipsy' a postcode is.
The new widget, designed by property search engine Gartoo and Lokku Labs, calculates a 'tipsy town' ranking based on a location's population and its concentration of pubs. The widget also reveals a heat map comparing the density of pubs in nearby areas. With around 28 million pints of beer consumed every day in the UK, and the average British male spending £1,144 on beer each year, the widget helps understanding the density of pubs per postcode across the UK.
"Local amenities such as pubs are an important factor in the decision-making process when house hunting," says Ruben Martinez of Gartoo.co.uk. "Living within stumbling distance of a good local is a definite pull for many house buyers. Our relationship with our local pub is almost as embedded in our British culture as our obsession with the property market itself."
At the start of the recent housing market downturn, it seems that property hunters would have profited more from investing in the beverage industry than in bricks and mortar. Investing a year's worth of beer money in the UK beverage industry five years ago would have made an £831 profit, whilst investing the same money in the UK property industry would have made a loss of £649.
Accessed via http://www.gartoo.net/widgets/, property hunters simply enter the postcode they want to evaluate to instantly reveal the concentration of pubs in their favourite locations. The widget has also been adopted by a number of great websites including pubs.org, and mylocalservices.co.uk.
Aiming to banish irrelevant search results for queries about houses and homes on the market, Gartoo.co.uk is a search site experimenting with specialised search technology which focuses on UK property keywords entered by the house hunter to find the most accurate fit.

Gartoo's 'How Tipsy is Your Town' widget uses an algorithm based on the number of pubs and population in a given postcode to produce a rank on how 'tipsy' the postcode is. The user simply enters their postcode and the widget returns a ranking based on how many pubs there are in their area. The widget also lists the individual statistics on the number of pubs per 1,000 people, and the average house price in that postcode.
