Hepatitis Foundation International is helping to educate future physicians about the preservation of liver health. Thelma King Thiel, Chairman and CEO of Hepatitis Foundation International, recently addressed second-year medical students at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virg., and discussed the importance of the liver and how it can be damaged by the choices and behaviors people engage in everyday.
“The liver is responsible for hundreds of functions in our bodies, and the difficulty is that most people don’t realize that they are damaging it on regular basis,” said Thiel. “We believe it is part of our responsibility to help fill this gap in knowledge by educating future physicians and other healthcare professionals so that they can better help patients prevent damage and avoid future liver-related illness such as hepatitis or fatty liver disease.”
Preservation of liver health is a major focus of the Foundation. The liver is affected by poor food choices, use of alcohol and drugs as well as environmental factors. The Foundation educates people about liver health through easy to relate to messages and engaging visuals to motivate people to assess their behaviors and make changes that will give the liver a break and help maintain and manage their health.
The students’ response to the presentation was very favorable. A number of the attendees responded that the presentation was “very helpful in helping me understand liver functions and pathology in layman terms,” and alerted them to examine their own behaviors. Others commented, “This is just what we needed to hear.”
