In addition, Young America will implement the Tangerine Wellness program for its own employees to help reduce the cost of healthcare and improve the health and productivity of its workforce. Tangerine Wellness is a voluntary incentive-based program that rewards employees based on results and participation in reaching their weight goals and maintaining them for the long term.

As part of the partnership agreement, Young America will provide an array of rewards fulfillment services for Tangerine Wellness participants including pre-paid cards, checks and points and will offer the program as part of its overall employee engagement platform. Young America provides employee and channel incentive programs that increase productivity and retention by rewarding for positive behaviors that benefit both the employer and employee.

In a recent survey of 466 large to midsize employers by the professional services company Towers Watson, 65 percent of respondents said that for 2011 they'll increase incentives to take part in wellness programs. And 62 percent said that by 2012, instead of offering employees incentives to participate in wellness programs like in years past, they would only pay up after they see demonstrated action and results.

Obesity represents 17 percent of all healthcare costs in the United States. According to a recent study by researchers at Duke University and published in October's Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, obesity is the number one cost driver to employers, costing an estimated $73.1 billion in healthcare costs, lower productivity and higher absenteeism. For employers, the cost of doing business with an unhealthy workforce is forcing many to reduce their coverage. However, employers who have used Tangerine Wellness, some since 2006, continue to see flat or lower healthcare premiums year-over-year, as rewards are designed for long-term participation and results.
