EHR Doctors, an industry leader in the HIPAA-compliant transfer of protected health information, today announced its involvement as the latest health information exchange approved to participate in the test phase of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) electronic submission of medical documentation (esMD) program. EHR Doctors will function as a gateway service for information exchange from healthcare providers to CMS.

“EHR Doctors is excited to bring it experience with the Nationwide Health Information Network (NWHIN) and connect healthcare providers to CMS through the esMD pilot program,” said Richard Braman, Chief Technology Officer of EHR Doctors. As an ESMD participant, EHR Doctors will utilize its Connect NWHIN Gateway technology for the secure electronic transmittal of medical record requests by Recovery Audit Contractors (RAC) and other federal Medicare and Medicaid related audit requesters. EHR Doctors also has extensive experience developing and implementing the Health Level 7 (HL7) Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and Health Information Technology Standard Panel (HITSP) specifications (C62) that enable health care providers to send their documentation in an interoperable electronic format rather than by traditional paper methods.

The esMD program is a CMS-developed delivery standard for the electronic submission of medical records in support of Medicare claim audits. It will will be expanded to other government audit requests in the future. EHR Doctors technology allows hospitals and doctors offices to wrap their scanned medical documents into the format needed to interoperate with CMS's system and to send the documents to CMS securely over the NWHIN. This technology will help health care providers realize administrative efficiencies and make the entire process more efficient.
