A team of “angels” recently brought beautiful smiles to Hondo, Texas, as veteran San Antonio cosmetic dentist Eddie Camacho, DDS, joined a Smiles on Wheels team to provide badly needed dental services to underserved residents of this Hill Country town. Camacho’s practice, Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio, is located at Bitters and Huebner in north-central San Antonio. Smiles on Wheels, a program sponsored by the Texas Dental Association’s Smiles Foundation, brings one- and two-day dental clinic events to rural communities in Texas that are underserved and have residents in extreme need of proper care. Services – including cleanings, fillings, extractions and other services that can be performed in a mission event setting – are free to the patients.

The city of Hondo contains one of Texas’ better-known quirky landmarks - a huge welcome sign on U.S. 90 that says: “This is God’s Country – Please don’t drive through it like Hell.”

Local community groups – churches, societies, social clubs and other organizations and agencies – are invited to sponsor Smiles on Wheels events through fundraising efforts and in-kind donations. A local event committee also recruits community volunteers to help the dental teams.

Once a local committee commits to the event, the Smiles Foundation matches the event with volunteer dentists, dental assistants, hygienists and other dental professionals to provide the much-needed dental care at no charge.

Smiles Foundation Chair W. Kurt Loveless described the Hondo event as “enormously successful,” adding: “Our team of volunteers was able to deliver charitable dentistry to the tune of $104,000 to 149 of the area’s underserved residents.”

“Thank you all so very much. You have done a really great thing for this town. What you all did for me saved me,” Smiles on Wheels patient Stella Rivas told the Foundation. “I couldn’t smile anymore, and having children that I couldn’t smile at, because of my teeth, hurt me a lot. But you fixed that for me. Now I can Smile. Thank you, my Angels.”

Dr. June Camacho, DDS, Camacho’s wife and co-founder of CDSA, said: “Dr. (Eddie) Camacho was the only doctor who actually did a cosmetic bonding case that day. (The patient) cried and said it was the smile she always dreamed of but never thought she would be able to get.”

The Smiles on Wheels program is a one- or two-day version of the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation multi-day Texas Mission of Mercy.

The Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public and the dental profession about oral health, and improving access to dental care for the citizens of Texas. Smiles on Wheels is a charitable mission that brings together dentists, dental professionals and volunteers to provide much-needed restorative dental care at no charge to Texans in need.
