Web Technology Reveals Diabetes Patient Influence on Weight Loss Surgery Options

Groundbreaking web technology reveals impact of patients with diabetes on mainstream acceptance of weight loss surgery options – particularly bariatric surgery.

The patient wave of support in social media has helped push diabetes surgery into mainstream acceptance faster.

Wool.labs (TM), a business intelligence company driven by social cognition technology, has published the next study in its series, “The Impact of Weight Loss Surgery On Patients With Diabetes,” revealing a highly engaged group of people with diabetes who were actively discussing weight loss surgery procedures and experiences online over the last nine years.

The “Patient Social Intelligence Report” leveraged Wool.labs’ unique WebDig (TM) technology to track every conversation accessible on the internet and determined the trends among diabetes patients and healthcare providers as related to options to help manage diabetes – including bariatric surgery. Conversation data mined from social media spanned nine years and showed that diabetes patients who had tried bariatric surgery were big advocates for the procedure and saw a positive impact on their Type II diabetes.

“We believe that the patient wave of support in social media has helped push diabetes surgery into mainstream acceptance faster,” says Michele Bennett, Chief Operating Officer of Wool.labs. “These surgeries are drastic procedures of which patients did not need to be convinced – they were already convinced.”

In 2007, the trends extended into mainstream media and continued momentum in 2008 with significant publications in medical journals like JAMA.

Current trends show that patient conversation was ultimately a key contributor to physician acceptance of weight loss surgery as a tool to control diabetes.

“In this instance, we believe patients are leading the way and it will be interesting to see how far physicians and the industry will take it from here,” says Scott Reese, Chief Executive Officer of Wool.labs. “Social media provides a unique window into patient and physician experiences. We can also see how those perceptions impact the patients’ relationship with the healthcare community.”

The 75-page report “The Impact of Weight Loss Surgery On Patients With Diabetes” contains the most representative conversations about the subject area and our analysis of how sentiment has changed over time.
