Conversation data mined from social media spanned nine years and showed that diabetes patients who had tried bariatric surgery were big advocates for the procedure and saw a positive impact on their Type II diabetes.

In 2007, the trends extended into mainstream media and continued momentum in 2008 with significant publications in medical journals like JAMA.

Current trends show that patient conversation was ultimately a key contributor to physician acceptance of weight loss surgery as a tool to control diabetes.
