Medical Terminology Systems: A Body System Approach, 6th Edition, published by F.A. Davis Company, has been awarded the 2011 Williams Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award (McGuffey) in the college level Life Sciences category by the Text and Academic Authors Association.

The McGuffey Award, created in 1993, recognizes textbooks and learning materials whose excellence has been demonstrated over time. The awards were named after William Holmes McGuffey, whose influential primers, in print from 1836 to 1921, helped bring the United States out of frontier illiteracy.

About the Authors

Barbara A. Gylys, MEd, CMA-A (AAMA), has devoted her entire life to college teaching and writing college textbooks. She began her career as an instructor at the University of Toledo in the Health and Human Services Department and was rapidly awarded a full professorship. In addition to teaching medical terminology, medical office procedures, and basic allied health courses, she was instrumental in the development of one- and two-year Certificate programs. During her tenure, Professor Gylys successfully developed certificate programs in Electrocardiography Technology, Respiratory Therapy Technology, and Medical Secretarial Technology. She also implemented the two-year Associate Degree program in Medical Assisting. In June 1997, she retired from the University of Toledo and was bestowed an emeritus citation to recognize her outstanding service and dedication. She now devotes her time to creating new editions of her textbooks and their ancillary products.

Mary Ellen Wedding, MEd, MT(ASCP), CMA (AAMA), AAPC, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Siena Heights University, Adrian, Michigan. She completed training as a medical technologist at Providence Hospital, Detroit, Michigan and received her certification as a Registered Medical Technologist from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She served as a medical technologist at Providence Hospital and later as a biologist in virus vaccine development and sterility testing at Parke Davis Pharmaceutical Company, Parkedale, Michigan. Professor Wedding earned a Master’s Degree in Health Education from the University of Toledo. During her 34-year-tenure at the University she received the Certified Medical Assistant designation from the American Association of Medical Assistants, and the Certified Professional Coder from the American Academy of Professional Coders. She is currently a Professor of Health Education in the Judith Herb College of Education, Health Science and Human Services, University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio.
