Members of AKB48, Japan’s top-selling pop band will join with six local bands and an island cultural dance group to headline “Japan Aid”, an all-day concert this Sunday, March 20, 2011 at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa. The concert will be staged at “Hilton Park”, near the entrance of the 32-acre complex that is Hilton Guam Resort & Spa. Admission is a $15 donation, for the event that runs from 3pm to 9pm. Food, drink, souvenirs, family activities and raffle tickets will be available at the venue. "We have been deeply affected by the tragedy in Japan and immediately moved to provide assistance during this time of need," says Nicolaus Priesnitz, General Manager of the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa. "The hotel's Blue Energy Committee, made up of hotel employees, tirelessly began to plan a benefit concert to raise funds to assist our neighbors in Japan during their time of need. With the assistance of the rest of the hotel team, local businesses, bands and the community, we have realized the event, remarkably done in just 72 hours.”
"I am extremely proud of the hotel team for taking full reins of this endeavor,” adds Priesnitz. “Guam may be divided from Japan by an ocean, but is truly connected by heart."
Performers at the event will include Iwasa Misaki and Suzuki Mariya from AKB48; several of Guam’s most popular performers, including Freedom Fries, DST Music, FIYAHdub, the Electric Boonie Dogs, Passenger 3 and the Chamorro cultural dance group Natibu; and international dance band The REtroSPECT (sic) from the Philippines.
The all-girl AKB48 has been Japan’s top selling artist for five years, with 20 hit singles, several iconic music videos and a live stage show performed nightly in Tokyo’s Akihabara district. Two members of AKB48, Iwasa Misaki and Suzuki Mariya, will perform and sign autographs at the "Japan Aid" event. The AKB48 ensemble is often compared to Idol-style groups or their videos prompt comparisons to the television show Glee. AKB48's most recent single, “Sakura no Ki ni Naro”, reached #1 in Japan just three weeks ago.
