Historic brand recognized at industry spirits competition

Barbados' coral-filtered water, the perfect balance of column still and pot still rums, and our beachside aging all contribute to the COCKSPUR style of rum. We are delighted that the Ultimate Spirits Challenge has recognized our devotion to excellence.

The West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD), producers of COCKSPUR Rum, the historic Bajan brand, today announced its results in the Ultimate Spirits Challenge.

COCKSPUR 12 Bajan Crafted Rum, made from the oldest rums stored at the distillery, scored a “93 – Excellent Highly Recommended” and was honored as a “Finalist”. Strutting right behind its older brother, COCKSPUR Fine Rum scored an “88 - Very Good Strong Recommendation” and distinguished itself with a “Great Value” accolade.

In his tasting notes, F. Paul Pacult, Ultimate Spirits Challenge Judging Chairman, writes of COCKSPUR 12: “Lush scents of brown butter, cane sugar and honey are featured in this expansive bouquet; flavors include butter cream, honeysuckle and brown sugar; long and deep.”

Andrew Hassell, Managing Director of WIRD, commenting on the results, said: “Our Technical Director, Rhett Harris, has done a superb job with both COCKSPUR 12 and COCKSPUR Fine Rums. Following recipes created many years ago by our founder and passed on through the generations, WIRD has kept COCKSPUR true to its heritage. Barbados’ coral-filtered water, the perfect balance of column still and pot still rums, and our beachside aging all contribute to the COCKSPUR style of rum. We are delighted that the Ultimate Spirits Challenge has recognized our devotion to excellence.”

Now in its second year, the Ultimate Spirits Challenge has established itself as one of the premier competitions in the industry. Its judging criterion is formidable and among its distinguished judges are Sean Ludford, Robert Plotkin, Jack Robertiello, Dale Degroff, Julie Reiner, Doug Frost and David Wondrich. Multiple panels of experts blind-tasted each entry by classification in appropriately grouped flights within each major spirits category, scoring each on the 100-point scale. Products that scored 90 points or higher were evaluated blind once again, in newly-created groupings by a different panel of judges. Top scoring products were reviewed yet again to determine a select group of finalists.

More About Cockspur Rum
Barbados is generally considered the birthplace of rum and COCKSPUR Rum was founded there in 1884. With its proud and colorful rooster icon, COCKSPUR has been an integral part of island life for over 125 years. COCKSPUR Rum is distilled from island cane molasses and Barbados’ own coral-filtered water. Using both column-still and pot-still distillation methods, the rum is then aged in American oak bourbon barrels. This combination of aging and blending creates the smooth character for which COCKSPUR is renowned. COCKSPUR Fine Rum is a golden amber rum and is the flagship brand. COCKSPUR 12 Bajan Crafted Rum is made from the oldest rums kept on reserve at the distillery. COCKSPUR Rum is available in most major US markets and is also distributed in the UK, Bermuda, Western Europe, and South Africa.
