Groundbreaking ceremony, golf event, and entertainment highlight Building Homes for Heroes efforts to build a home for a local veteran

Army Sgt Joel Tavera

Building Homes for Heroes leads Tampa Bay efforts to build a new home for severely injured solider and his family. Planned weekend of events kick off in Tampa Bay to help raise funds, enhance awareness, and honor Army Sergeant Joel Tavera.

In 2008, the Humvee that Sgt. Joel Tavera was riding in was hit by five rockets. The blasts killed three men. Joel was thought to be dead as well. Tragically, Sgt. Tavera lost sight in both of his eyes, his right leg, four fingers on his left hand, and suffered very serious head trauma and critical burns to 60 percent of his body. At the time, his parents were told that their son was the second most severely injured Army soldier to survive since the war in Iraq began. Joel received The Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

On Friday March 25th at 2:00 pm, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held to mark the beginning of construction of a home for Sgt. Joel Tavera at 20007 Outpost Point Drive, Tampa, Florida (Grand Hampton Development).

Building Homes for Heroes has partnered with William Ryan Homes to lead the effort to build a new home for Sgt. Tavera and family. In addition, PCL Civil Constructors, Inc, Tijuana Flats, John Madison Landscaping, and the Hillsborough Fire Fighters are generous supporters of this cause. Building Homes for Heroes is a non-profit organization that supports the needs of severely wounded or disabled veterans. It provides individuals, corporations and others with an opportunity to help our nation’s severely wounded and disabled veterans rebuild their lives. The Tavera family will be the recipient of a new specially-designed Tampa Bay home. Army Sgt. Tavera and his family will be in attendance at these events.
