Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil, PhD supports and explains the theory cited in a recent study that uncertainty could increase a woman’s romantic attraction towards men (http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2011/02/07/Woman-most-attracted-to-man-if-shes-unsure/UPI-68001297136087/). The study published in Psychological Science based on an experiment conducted with college undergraduates found that the women who found the men most attractive were those who weren’t sure how much the men liked them.
“Women are attracted to illusive men, not because they are masochistic, but because women know from experience that men are more distant. There is an allure to a more mysterious man,” explains Dr. Bonnie, author of the NY Times about.com best dating book of 2010 Make Up Don’t Break Up with accompanying DVD Falling in Love and Staying in Love. However, without the right skills women pursuing illusive men can easily trigger them into becoming vanishing men.
“Women are the guardians of connection, and are used to bridging the gap between their distancing men. 80 percent of men are Distancers and 80 percent of women are Pursuers. Since women are more wired for emotional connections, they are more adept to become the guardians of connection. However skills are needed, and most couples don’t have the tools. I teach Smart Heart Skills in my book Make Up Don’t Break Up that helps women create emotional intimacy in their relationships,” says Dr. Bonnie, who adds that trying to connect and communicate without using Smart Heart Skills can push men further away—ending the relationship before it starts, and cause detrimental power struggles.
