Los Angeles Filmmakers Screen Their Movie, to Help Save Plaza de la Raza Non-profit Arts School

Los Angeles Filmmakers Sarah Louise Wilson (CalArts Alumni) and Mercedes LeAnza (LMU Alumni) of Stella Bella Productions, are giving back to the Los Angeles community on April 2nd holding 2 free community screenings of their acclaimed independent film “The Accidental Death of Joey by Sue” to benefit Plaza de la Raza.

A love story that unfolds on the most unlikely day of the year of Dia de los Muertos. Neal Thibedeau and Sarah Louise Wilson craft a very charming tale of young love, wrap around with hint of darkness and heartwarming tones that will enchant.

Located in East Los Angeles’ historic Lincoln Park, Plaza de la Raza (Plaza) is a private non-profit organization that for 41 years has served the Latino community and greater east Los Angeles. Providing year round programs in arts education, performing and visual arts to more than 10,000 children every year. Due to impending budget cuts Plaza has lost a large portion of it’s funding critical to daily operations and the many services the school provides to the local community. The screenings and event in Lincoln Park on April 2nd will kick off the fundraising drive to save Plaza de la Raza.

THE FILM: “The Accidental Death of Joey by Sue” premiered at “HBO Presents The New York International Latino Film Festival 2010”

The film stars: Steve Talley as Joey (American Pie Presents: Beta House, Hole in One) Mercedes LeAnza as Sue (Jelly, Dark Metropolis), Lin Shaye (There’s something About Mary, Detroit Rock City), Ashley Fink (Glee) and Ignacio Serricchio (General Hospital, Quarantine 2). Written and Directed by Sarah Louise Wilson and Neal Thibedeau.

The Accidental Death Of Joey by Sue is set in Los Angeles and the film’s colorful Dia de Los Muertos festival scenes were shot entirely at Plaza de la Raza and features performances by Plaza’s young mariachi singers, folklorico dancers and students.

Stella Bella Productions is encouraging the greater LA Community: Film Industry, Press, and all local artists to come out and support the survival of this vital L.A. Arts organization. The screenings are offered free…but a donation of $5.00 upon entrance to the event is suggested. 100% of all donations as well as proceeds from the evening’s raffle will go directly to support Plaza de La Raza.

This year marks the 41st anniversary of Plaza de la Raza and 21st year of CalArts collaboration with the school (the CAP Program) CAP allows CalArts students opportunities to work, teach, perform and mentor aspiring Plaza students in the Arts. This year’s CAP production is a modern adaption of Pedro Calderon De La Barca’s “Life is a Dream” to be performed at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/Cal Arts Theater). Sarah Louise Wilson wrote the play. For the past 10 years Sarah has tirelessly offered her considerable talents and heart to Plaza’s mission and it’s students.

Stella Bella Productions is currently involved in a TV pilot “Ash Global” with Hogtown Productions. Their next feature film is “Scarlet Ibis” a Latino Caribbean themed romance/ fantasy with Executive Producer Peter Murrieta (Wizards of Waverly Place, Wizards of Waverly Place the movie).

Logline/ Synopsis:

Women talk in paragraph…but three little words may cost a man his life.
In the wake of Dia de Los Muertos, a young couple has 24 hours to decide if their love should live or die. With Sue (Mercedes LeAnza) afraid of love and Joey (Steve Talley) afraid of not figuring out what he did wrong in the first place, the couple is swept away by the intoxication of Dia de Los Muertos where the dead walk the earth for a day and where phantoms of Sue's past may force Joey to end up on the altar as well.
