Burnett Staffing Specialists was among eleven local businesses honored with a Star Award at the prestigious 13th Annual Economic Development Summit and Star Awards Luncheon sponsored by the Houston West Chamber of Commerce. Community and business leaders enjoyed the awards presentation and a keynote speech from Dr. Robert W. (Bill) Gilmer, Senior Economist and Vice President of the Federal Reserve in Dallas who spoke on the “Outlook for the Houston Economy” – a topic near and dear to everyone who lives and works in Houston. Melissa Wilson, co-anchor of FOX26 Morning News again emceed the event which included almost 600 attendees.

"West Houston continues to be the epicenter of economic growth for Harris County and the businesses honored here at the Star Awards Luncheon gain this spotlight for the spectacular services they provide their community,” said Andi Maceo, Cole Commercial Realty and Chair of the Houston West Chamber of Commerce Star Awards Committee. “These leaders exemplify the best in business acumen and work diligently to improve the quality of life for every resident of West Houston.”

“West Houston is home to many outstanding businesses that provide exceptional service and quality products,” said Jeannie Bollinger, President of the Houston West Chamber of Commerce. “The Star Awards Luncheon is our signature platform for recognizing these companies as leaders in our community for reaching their goals both in business and community service. We are thrilled to have such a fabulous selection of strong and committed companies and organizations strengthening the economy and making Houston’s Westside shine.”

The selection of the winner in each category was based upon overall business performance and contributions to the West Houston community during the past year. Criteria taken into consideration include number of employees added, revenue increases and support of the community through donations of time and/or money.

The Impact Award was given to West Houston Medical Center for its continuation of providing quality medical care to the people of West Houston. The acute care hospital is currently undergoing a $70 million expansion that will add 95,000 square feet to the facility, 53 new beds, plus a larger intensive care unit, more operating rooms and an increased focus on women’s health services. It has also formed an affiliation with The Woman’s Hospital of Texas that provides women in West Houston convenient access to physicians from The Women’s Hospital who specialize in high risk pregnancies. $30 million of the $70 million project was spent on expanding women’s services that celebrated their grand opening in January. The department is now situated on the new second floor on the south side of the facility above the Emergency Department. It includes all new Labor and Delivery Rooms, Post Partum Rooms, as well as a newborn nursery and level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

This year’s winners in the Newly Opened or Relocated category were Allegiance Bank Texas, Sanford-Brown College Houston and Methodist West Houston Hospital. Named as winners in the Existing Business Category were Where the Winds Blow, ComedySportz, Burnett Staffing Specialists and ABB, Inc. Honorable Mention in the Existing Business Category was given to ContentActive, LLC. The Star Award for Non-Profit was awarded to Memorial Assistance Ministries. The Young Entrepreneur Category recognized Jarrett Pumphrey with ClearCorrect.
