Big oil is often a main target of environmental groups. While there are numerous environmental problems associated with its core product, some oil companies have been more proactive than others in addressing their impact. Greenopia sought to highlight which oil companies were the most progressive, efficient, and transparent in its annually updated environmental ranking of 10 of the biggest oil companies in the country. This year, the greenest overall oil company was Sunoco.

”After the tragic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, consumers are struggling to determine the most responsible chains from which to purchase gas,” said Doug Mazeffa, Research Director of Greenopia. “Sunoco has always scored highly in our analysis, and their detailed reporting and transparency has always set them apart from many of the other oil companies on our list. This year, they were clearly the top performer.”

BP fell into fourth place after being in the top spot the past two years. In spite of the impacts associated Deepwater Horizon oil spill, BP still performed well enough in terms of its efficiency, transparency, stance on climate change, and pursuit of renewable energy to place ahead of several other oil companies.

Greenopia extensively researched publicly-available sources in an effort to rank the oil companies that operate major retail fueling stations across the United States. Greenopia utilized a twelve-part analysis method, including greenhouse gas emissions and oil spill efficiency, to rank the top 10.

Can't find a Sunoco station? Pull into or Shell or Hess, ranked #2 and #3, respectively. The world's largest oil company, Exxon Mobil, was ranked #5 overall for the 2nd straight year.
