High schools from throughout Southern California will compete for a $1000 prize and pizza for all hikers from their school at the first “Hike for the Homeless” at Griffith Park this Saturday, April 2. The hike benefits the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Cardinal Manning Homeless Center on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles.
Justin Mammen, Deputy Director of the Manning Center, will be available for interviews from 1 to 4 PM on Wednesday, March 30 for media wanting advance coverage opportunities. The Manning Center is located at 231 Winston Street in Skid Row. Mr. Mammen’s phone number is (213) 229-9970.
The Hike for the Homeless begins at 8:15 AM on Saturday, April 2 and features three options – the easy one mile Old Zoo Trail, a more challenging trail next to the Old Zoo Trail, or the even more challenging 2.64 mile Fern Canyon Trail, each of which takes about 90 minutes to complete. Both hikes will leave from the Merry Go Round Parking Lot.
Registration is just $25 for adults, $15 for students and $5 for pets. Registration includes a t-shirt, refreshments and light breakfast. Sponsorship packages are also available.
