Huawei Technologies remains on top and for W-CDMA as Ericsson leads LTE segment. NSN leads GSM market.

The global base transmitting station (BTS) market grew by 2.8% in units in 2010, according to the latest report from EJL Wireless Research titled “Global BTS Transceiver Market Analysis and Forecast, 7th Edition, 2010-2015.” “Even with the negative impact of the Indian telecom embargo, BTS shipments were stable in 2010,” says founder and President, Earl Lum. The report provides a unique perspective on the global shipments and demand for base station equipment covering all air interface standards and frequencies (except WiMAX) and major OEMs including Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei Technologies, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks, and ZTE.

“Huawei Technologies had modest growth while ZTE posted another strong year due to domestic Chinese operator demand for 3G equipment. Chinese OEM market share remained at 50% overall in 2010,” says Lum. The overall base station market is expected to drop in the 2011 and then grow in low single digits from 2012 through 2013 and then drop again in 2014 and 2015. As predicted in our prior forecast, W-CDMA shipments surpassed GSM shipments in 2010 to become the largest segment. We continue to forecast that LTE shipments will become the largest segment by 2012.

In this edition of the report, EJL Wireless Research had added an in-depth analysis of distributed base station as well as remote radio unit (RRU) shipments for the major OEMs. Distributed base stations represented 65% of the total market in 2010 and will reach 93% by 2015 while RRU shipments grew 58% from 2009 levels. Huawei Technologies was the leader in both the distributed base station and RRU categories in 2010.
