The KEY-UP family of cryptographic modules from Dallas-based Ian Donnelly Systems, Inc. (IDS) has been certified compliant with all security requirements under the FIPS 140-2, Level 3 standard for devices that protect sensitive data in computer and telecommunications systems.
IDS received “Certificate No. 1437 – KEY-UP Cryptographic Module by Ian Donnelly Systems,” under testing conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the United States and the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) of the Canadian government.
FIPS 140-2 provides four increasing, qualitative levels of security: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. These levels are intended to cover the wide range and potential applications and environments in which cryptographic modules may be employed within computer and telecommunications systems; each level offers an increase in security over the preceding level.

The IDS Key-Up Cryptographic Module is a multi-chip standalone device encased in a hardened, opaque commercial-grade steel case. The primary purpose of these modules is to provide data security in systems that facilitate and process electronic funds transfer (EFT) transactions.
The KEY-UP family encrypts personal identification numbers (PINs) and formats them for transmission to other network processors. It automatically translates the format and key of the received PIN blocks to those required by the next communication link. The new FIPS version performs Triple DES for encryption and decryption, Triple DES MAC and SHA-1 for hashing.
The tamper-proof KEY-UP V5.1 comes in two models – as a stand-alone device in the original, secure casing – or a new, rack-mounted unit.
IDS was founded in 1987 to develop new markets and applications for security encryption devices used in the EFT arena.
