Installed at the new Colorado State University Behavioral Sciences Building in the south atrium, The Fabric of Knowledge, a Kinetic Sculpture by Mel Ristau, folds and unfolds in a kinetic beauty that forever shifts and changes.

Mel Ristau creates playful, generative architectural installations that celebrate the positive aspects of human vision. His aerial installations are accessible to a broad public while filling both intimate and vast architectural spaces with subtle movement. The Fabric of Knowledge folds and unfolds in a kinetic beauty that forever shifts and changes. Installed at the new Colorado State University Behavioral Sciences Building in the south atrium the suspended sculpture is an abstraction of Aspen leaves spinning over a sunlit Colorado stream, a curtain of branches stretching across the visual space—reflective, textural, forever shifting, changing and unfolding. The 25" x 50" x 6' work is composed of stainless steel cable, tube and rod and 920 variously textured aluminum panels.

"My creative objective is to produce sculpture that will captivate and inspire through abstract content that projects a welcoming sense of life—stirring both mind and spirit. If you smile, I have been successful," Ristau said.

The Fabric of Knowledge is the first suspended mobile sculpture Ristau installed in 2011. Since 2003, he has created captivating aerial sculpture each with a unique identity appropriate to the setting for which it is created. His working process is highly collaborative inviting input while offering concept development as needed in order to achieve a refined, site-specific, celebratory, statement of place. Ristau has installed over 20 monumental sculptures in corporate, healthcare and university facilities such as the Anschutz Medical Center in Denver, CO; Children's Hospital of Atlanta, GA and the University of Nebraska in Omaha, NE.

Ristau's public and corporate art is often called "the crowning showpiece" in a new building and he receives rave reviews for being "superbly professional," "a joy to work with," while having a "masterful understanding of architectural space." His sense of humor is lauded and not only do his sculptures bring smiles to faces, they elicit "oohs," "aahs," and "wow's"! He creates welcoming, memorable works of sustaining visual interest that are immediately appealing to a broad audience.
