Honolulu Drawings: Tattoo Detour 2 contemporary fine art drawings by American artist Jack Balas on exhibit at Swank Modern Design, Palm Springs, California, Apr 15 through May 29, 2011.

Swank Modern Design in Palm Springs, California, presents a solo exhibition of contemporary fine art drawings by American artist Jack Balas, from April 15 through May 29, 2011. Represented in the show are engaging portraits of young men, sketched by the artist during his annual sojourn to the beaches of Hawaii, combined with elements from the tropical landscape that add an often erotic narrative of their own.

"Normally, when traveling, I've been content to explore and take photos," explains Balas, "a method that works fine in New York or Paris when you're there for a week or so. But in Honolulu for an extended stay the last four summers, I realized that Waikiki is a different animal altogether, relentless as it is with the shirtless men who are my muse. So, with a sketchpad I was carrying around, I created this body of work out of a suitcase while living in a hotel room."

"Drawing on the beaches, and in restaurants and hotel lobbies, I was able to enjoy a completely different rhythm of work, surrounded by people who occasionally wandered over to look at what I was up to on some bench in Kapiolani Park, or under a palm tree."

"The setting of an extreme tourist spot such as Waikiki posed the enjoyable task of trying to reach beyond the predictable cliches of surfers, babes and palms. The resulting drawings are conflations of those very surfers, palms, tattoos, military guys, lobby furniture, waves and restaurant tables, offering intersections between the surf of Hockney, Picabia, Pettibon, Guston and Westermann, fact and fiction."

There will be a public reception on Friday, April 22 from 5-8pm. Open viewings will be held from 11am-5pm on Sat and Sun, April 23 and 24; and May 14 and 15. The gallery is also open by appointment on other dates and times during the exhibition by calling 760-699-8992.
