Rackmounted Power Distribution Unit Supports Scheduled Shutdowns to Lower Power Consumption; ClimateCab Lets You Cool Your IT Equipment Without Cooling the Entire Room

Black Box Corporation (NASDAQ:BBOX), an industry-leading provider of voice communications, data infrastructure, and networking products, today announced it now offers IT managers two products to increase the energy efficiency of their enterprise computing environments: its Outlet-Managed PDU (Power Distribution Unit) rackmounted power monitoring and scheduling device, and ClimateCab™, a wall-mounted or freestanding equipment cabinet that supports maximum climate management efficiency. The innovations not only pay for themselves via lower electricity costs, they also help organizations do their part to achieve more environmentally responsible computing.

“In almost any enterprise, data centers and computing hubs are major priorities for green solutions,” said Gina Dickson, Global Product Manager, Black Box. “Our Outlet-Managed PDU and ClimateCab are two exceptionally efficient alternatives for use around telecom equipment, server farms, storage networks, and other places where rackmounted equipment is installed. We encourage IT managers to consider cutting their cooling costs, lowering their power consumption, and increasing their overall energy efficiency by investigating these two products.”

Outlet-Managed PDU

As an “intelligent” power management device, Black Box’s Outlet-Managed PDU is a breakthrough that enables managers to remotely monitor power consumption at the individual device level. The PDU will automatically send notification via e-mail, text message, SNMP, or SYSLOG when changes in current levels, temperature, circuit breaker status, or other factors exceed preset threshold levels.

With the rackmounted Outlet-Managed PDU, users can send instructions to switch an outlet, a group, a branch, or a whole group of outlets. It also enables managers to set parameters to disable outlets to reduce current consumption or to switch on cooling devices. If the current load goes too high, it intelligently sheds load by temporarily shutting down non-essential equipment.

To plan better use of electricity, the Outlet-Managed PDU generates reports that track consumption throughout the day, week, and month, enabling IT staff to make more intelligent decisions on energy usage. Non-essential and/or unused equipment, for example, can be scheduled for shutdowns during off hours.

ClimateCab

Black Box’s ClimateCab creates a customized, protected environment for rackmounted IT equipment anywhere—on a wall, in a closet, on the factory floor, even as a subset of a larger data center. Instead of having to cool and air-filter an entire room, it’s possible to surround only the necessary equipment; the resulting savings in money and energy can be significant.

ClimateCab units are specifically engineered to solve tough cooling problems. Effective even in ambient temperatures up to 130º F, the units feature a high-efficiency, closed-loop cooling system that recirculates air in the cabinet and keeps outside air out, while an internal evaporator eliminates condensation. Seamless door gaskets on the NEMA 12 rated cabinet protect against dirt, dust, debris, and splashing liquids.

ClimateCab wallmount units are available in either AC- or fan-cooled versions. Freestanding 42U cabinets are suitable for both server and data use, and offer a mobile base for easy positioning.
