A new toolkit allows developers to use VSTO 2008 and VSTO 2010 to create powerful user interfaces in Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010 by adding any .NET forms to Microsoft Outlook views and forms.

"Add-in Express has provided a compelling tool that gives Outlook developers the ability to build creative and powerful solutions," said Randy Byrne, program manager for development on the Outlook team at Microsoft Corp.

Add-in Express, a Visual Studio Industry Partner and manufacturer of Rapid Application Development tools for building Microsoft Office solutions, announces that it has added another powerful product to its catalogue: Add-in Express Regions for Microsoft Outlook and Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO).

Add-in Express Regions for Microsoft Outlook and VSTO is an extension for VSTO 2008 and VSTO 2010 that allows developers to customize Microsoft Outlook views and Outlook forms with any .NET controls. Traditional COM Add-ins developed with VSTO limit developers to use either a very basic implementation of customizable task panes, or Outlook form regions that have some limitations and are not supported in Microsoft Outlook 2003. Add-in Express Regions offer many more features that can be implemented into existing VSTO 2008 or VSTO 2010 Outlook COM Add-in projects using either Microsoft Visual Basic .NET or Microsoft Visual C#:

  • Add regions to practically all Outlook windows
  • Create regions for the main Outlook (Explorer) window (up to 17 different areas are supported) or all Outlook item (Inspector) windows
  • Multiple regions in the same location are "shared." In other words, they are stacked on top of each other and can be easily switched between by the user
  • Regions can be not only hidden and minimized, but can be dragged and docked into all supported areas that developers allow the users to move them to
  • Regions are supported for all versions - from Microsoft Outlook 2003 to Microsoft Outlook 2010

Add-in Express helps developers write their code faster and better - one of their core philosophies. As such, Add-in Express Regions prominently features wizards for quickly creating regions, associating them with Outlook windows and binding the regions to various Outlook modes (such as Read or Compose windows).

Most importantly, Add-in Express Regions for Microsoft Outlook and VSTO provides developers with more freedom for building truly creative, flexible and powerful user experiences for enterprise applications within Outlook in ways that were previously limited.

"Add-in Express has provided a compelling tool that gives Outlook developers the ability to build creative and powerful solutions," said Randy Byrne, program manager for development on the Outlook team at Microsoft Corp.
