Two of the top boarding schools Scotland have joined together to put on an outstanding choral concert in Edinburgh’s St Mary’s Cathedral.
Glenalmond College (http://www.glenalmondcollege.co.uk) and Belhaven Preparatory School, both boarding schools Scotland, staged the performance of Britten’s St Nicolas along with the City of Edinburgh Music School.
Following a series of solo pieces by Glenalmond music scholars, the second half of the programme was a performance of Britten’s Cantata Saint Nicolas by all three schools, conducted by Tim Ridley and starring professional tenor, Oliver Brewer. Glenalmond’s choral society was joined by the Chamber Choir of Belhaven Hill Prep School, and accompanied by the musicians of the state-funded City of Edinburgh Music School.
This was one of Glenalmond’s most ambitious musical projects, and the partnership with the other two schools added an extra dimension. The pupils of all three schools performed to an incredibly high standard and came together to bring the story of Saint Nicolas to life before a full audience at the Cathedral.
Among the boarding schools Scotland, Glenalmond is renowned for the strength of its music, and the choir and choral society of the school are particularly strong. Glenalmond’s director of music, Tim Ridley, said, “This concert provided a wonderful opportunity for two of the boarding schools Scotland to come together to stage a magnificent concert in a wonderful venue.”
