Research Electronics International (REI) was invited to present the ORION Non-Linear Junction Detector (NLJD) at the 2011 National Public Safety Conference held in California as an interdiction method to detect and locate hidden contraband cell phones in prisons.

Contraband Cellular phones continue to be one of the most dangerous forms of prison contraband, allowing inmates to bypass internal security measures creating a security risk that can reach beyond prison walls. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has estimated that the number of confiscated cell phones by CDCR has grown from approximately 1,400 to 10,760 in just 4 years, demonstrating the growth of this problem.

In an effort to address the contraband cell phone issue, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and California Technology Agency (CTA) hosted the 2011 National Public Safety Technology Conference “Coping with Contraband Cell Phones in Correctional Settings…” with the purpose of bringing together regional and national experts in the fields of contraband cell phones.

REI was invited to present the ORION Non-Linear Junction Detector (NLJD) at this National Conference in an effort to publicize solutions to the contraband cell phone problem. The ORION Non-Linear Junction Detector (NLJD) manufactured by REI in Algood Tennessee USA, detects electronic components allowing the user to locate hidden devices (such as hidden cellular phones), even if the electronic item is turned off or not transmitting. The ORION will detect hidden electronics through common objects such as mattresses, food stores, clothing etc.
