Awarded for its e-government and communication initiatives, SurpriseAZ.gov has been recognized as a 2011 Top Local Government Website Award recipient by online encyclopedia and reference resource Juggle.com.

This year’s recipients applied innovative web technology in order to provide citizens with greater access to government information and services. SurprizeAZ.gov is one of several Local Government portals helping to support and strengthen the local community.

According to Ken Lynch, Communications Director for the City of Surprise, “The site is extremely rich in information, containing tens of thousands of discrete pieces of information. Organizing these in an easy to use way is a constant challenge and one we heard about from residents. We duplicated many entry points under different sub menus anticipating how people might look for information. Ultimately, and most satisfyingly from our customers' perspective, we added a Google search engine to the site.”

Award finalists offer an array of features and functionality that cause them to surpass websites in their class. The Juggle.com government awards editors hand-selected this year’s Top Local Government Award recipients by evaluating a variety of site features and functionality, including usability, timely content, access to e- government services and technological innovation.

“The overarching challenge is the sheer volume of information, and that requires constant review for best practices. The site has never been in better shape in terms of its searchability but we are always looking for ways to improve,” noted Lynch. He added, “We are committed to getting news on the site quickly and accurately, and we never waver from that.”

Award recipients receive a feature page on Juggle.com that includes an interview with one of the individuals responsible for maintaining or managing each website.
