American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery recognizes hospitals and physicians who excel and provide leadership in leading-edge surgical technique

The American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS) today announced Minimally Invasive Surgery Accreditation of three Allentown, Pa. surgeons- Dr. Michael S. Patriarco, Dr. Vincent Lucente and Dr. Tirun Gopal.

These three surgeons are being recognized for their expertise in laparoscopic and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, including laparoscopic hysterectomy. The recognition was given to Drs. Patriarco, Lucente and Gopal for their high volume of minimally invasive procedures performed and positive patient outcomes, according to AIMIS.

Hysterectomy involves removal of the uterus and cervix and, for some conditions, the fallopian tubes and ovaries. Each year, more than 600,000 women undergo the procedure, with one in three women in the United States undergoing the surgery by age 60.

Traditional open hysterectomy usually requires patients to spend three to four days in the hospital and up to six weeks recovering from a painful abdominal incision. With only tiny incisions, laparoscopic hysterectomy allows patients to go home the same day, and they can resume normal activity in one to two weeks.

The designation represents Drs. Patriarco, Lucente and Gopal’s commitment to bringing the local community new and proven medical technologies that improve patient outcomes, shorten hospital stays, and lead to a better quality of life for patients and their families.

“Being named an AIMIS Accredited Surgeon is exciting, but what’s rewarding is that it shows we’re doing what’s best for patients,” said Dr. Michael S. Patriarco, Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital Network. “The physicians on the medical staff at St. Luke’s have pioneered many of these minimally invasive techniques, and they’ve shown commitment to it because of the benefits to patients.”

“We are pleased to recognize Drs. Patriarco, Lucente and Gopal as Accredited AIMIS surgeons,” said Dr. K. Warren Volker, CEO and chairman of AIMIS. “Minimally invasive surgery offers so many benefits to the entire healthcare chain, but most importantly, to the patient. Less discomfort, reduced scarring and dramatically faster recovery times are all key benefits of these techniques,” he added.
