Practice now offering VenaCure EVLT® procedure - a minimally invasive way to treat varicose veins

Dr. Shashidhar Kusuma of Outpatient Surgical Services of Plantation is offering a free public seminar on varicose veins and new treatment options at the practice's offices, Thursday, April 14 from 5:30 to 7:00pm. Light refreshments will be served.
Dr. Kusuma is considered a leading expert on the treatment of vein disease in southern Florida and is now offering the VenaCure EVLT® procedure - a fast, safe and minimally-invasive laser vein procedure for the treatment of varicose veins.

"Research shows about 40 percent of women and 25 percent of men suffer from varicose veins," says Dr. Kusuma. "Venous insufficiency, or vein disease, can be debilitating, impacting a person's ability to do day-to-day activities, maintain their health and interact with their families in the best way. It is a progressive health problem that in almost all cases will only get worse and if left untreated can lead to ulceration, and in some cases bleeding."

Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted rope-like veins that appear near the surface of the skin. In normally functioning veins, tiny one-way valves open as blood flows toward the heart and close to prevent blood from flowing backward. When these valves fail, blood pools in the veins, resulting in a buildup of pressure that weakens their walls and causes them to bulge. Over time, the increased pressure can cause additional valves to fail. The result is often patients suffering from increasingly swollen and painful legs.

"The VenaCure EVLT procedure we offer is a minimally invasive treatment," Dr. Kusuma said. "There is minimal-to-no scarring or downtime. When it is deemed medically necessary, the procedure is covered by most health insurance plans."

In the VenaCure EVLT procedure, a laser fiber is inserted into the vein through a tiny puncture site. The laser energizes the fiber as it is withdrawn from the vein. Energy emitted from the tip of the fiber causes only the treated vein to close, while the body automatically routes the blood to other healthy veins. The patient receives only local anesthetic and experiences little-to-no discomfort during the procedure. After treatment, the patient walks out of the office and can resume normal activities immediately.
