Senior Smiles Health Fair on April 30 supports older residents in goal of bettering their overall health and wellness.

The University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry invites seniors from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to its annual Senior Smiles Health Fair on Saturday, April 30, 2011.

This free event is being hosted by the Dugoni School of Dentistry in conjunction with Older American’s Month. It will take place from 9am to Noon at the dental school’s San Francisco campus at 2155 Webster Street. The event is open to all seniors ages 55 and older. No appointments are necessary, however those interested in scheduling a group visit should call 415-929-6426.

The Senior Smiles Health Fair aims to help seniors on their way to better health by providing free screenings and tests such as dental, blood glucose and vision. Services offered this year will include dental health screenings, oral cancer and denture screenings in addition to blood glucose, bone density, cholesterol, vision and hearing testing. Complimentary refreshments will also be offered.

The event is coordinated by student and faculty volunteers from the Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) group, in partnership with California Pacific Medical Center’s Community Health Resource Center.

“The seniors we see during Senior Smiles Health Fair will receive valuable information about their state of health, including their dental health,” said Christine Miller, RDH, MHS, MA and director of Community Programs. “Our school seeks to promote overall body health in addition to dental health. This is a great chance for us to interact with and educate our local seniors.”

The Senior Smiles Health Fair has been offered by the Dugoni School of Dentistry for 16 of the past 17 years. Its goals are to support seniors in the prevention of diseases and the early identification of a change in their health status. Events like this health fair provide an opportunity for seniors to learn about improving their health at no cost to them.
