Several years ago, author/illustrator Kevin Dove's oldest daughter surprised him with an illustrated book she created. Carefully stapled together she put into words and graphics her answer to one of life's greatest mysteries. Later that school year she was given an award by her teacher in recognition for her creativity. She had become an author/illustrator. Mr. Dove was so proud. But this got him thinking. He decided it was time to share with his daughter the coloring book he produced while attending the Corcoran College of Art & Design in the early '90s. Dove dug around in the basement until he found his old files. Oh, the memories. Days prior to InDesign, Photoshop layers and gigabyte hard drives. As a matter of fact, prior to Internet accessibility. What better way to encourage Dove's budding young author than to lead by example. The tools and tech were prime to fulfill his dream, to turn the coloring book Sir Nick of Tyme into the illustrated children's book he wanted and knew it could be. The year was 2007 and Sir Nick had finally found new life. That was just the beginning. Today, with devices like Apple's iPad and ebook readers like the Nook Color, self published authors are beginning to level the playing field with the epub file format, the current standard for ebooks.
"Competing with large publishers on pricing is the greatest challenge I face," says Dove. "But, with the epub conversion of Sir Nick of Tyme I can price my book competitively and make it available through online retail outlets without the pressure of getting into brick and mortar stores."
Sir Nick of Tyme is the story of Nick, the son of a baker in the Middle Ages, who dreams of becoming a knight in a hamlet called Tyme. The tradition of the day dictates that he should inherit his father's trade instead. Who would believe a baker could ever be a sword wielding man in armor?
This book is a portrait of old fashioned values and the importance of parental guidance illustrated by Nick's journey into adulthood. Nick learns as a boy good manners, taking pride in his craft and to be mindful of the less fortunate; lessons taught by his father. It's also a story about following your dreams. Nick's dream of knighthood is highly unlikely, but he discovers that dreams can come true through unexpected means. In the end the town learns that kindness is infectious and that character is a knight's greatest asset.
Sir Nick of Tyme is a 30 paged paperback that can be purchased from Amazon for $10. It is also available as a 35 paged ebook that's compatible with devices such as the iPad, iPhone, Nook, Literati and Kobo for $.99.
